Wandering. Tourists, Pilgrims, Migrants
Treść
In the midst of the summer holiday season, we are presenting three perspectives on travelling. The aim is a concrete destination which a tourist reaches on holiday, a pilgrim on the way to a sanctuary and a migrant on the way to a safe location. These are three very different experiences.
Today, everyone is a tourist. People collect digital photos and knick-knacks from their leisure trips. At the exhibition we are presenting the tourist perspective through landscapes and postcards, as well as through specific trophies from holiday destinations in the form of souvenirs made by local craftsmen.
One becomes a pilgrim from the need of the heart which provides motivation for what is sometimes a long hike and strenuous effort. We are focusing on pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem, as well as on a local route in Poland’s Małopolska region to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. We are also presenting valuable souvenirs - medieval and contemporary pilgrim shells and small devotional items.
The experience of migration is most difficult and it is usually imposed on people. It is a journey along an uncertain path with the hope of finding a safe haven. We are presenting this dimension of travelling from the perspective of the Peruvian Asháninka, who, living close to nature and experiencing climate change, are forced to roam in search of safety. At the same time, they are trying to live as they always have - respecting their identity, drawing strength from family ties and from retelling myths about their ancestors.
